Safety and
Accessibility Meet Designer’s Approval
Virginia Beach, VA-
Walk in tub industry
With the economical downturn in the
USA senior citizens are rethinking their
retirement years. Sales of senior retirement
complexes have dropped as a result of
Boomers losing their 401K nest eggs during
Wall Street’s recent struggles. In light of
the changing economic climate, decline in
the housing market, and the inability to
sale homes Senior Citizens are changing
their retirement plans, and opting to “age
in place”. According to a recent poll by
National Association of Home Builders 75% of
remodelers report an increase in inquiries
related to aging in place, and retrofitting
family homes with
walk in tubs &
bathroom
safety products. Baby Boomers are
choosing to remain in their family home,
modifying the layout to be ADA compliant by
using universal design modification
standards. After the initial remodeling
plans are drawn up, Boomers make a bee-line
to interior decorators and ask them to
beautify all the safety bars,
handicap tubs, raised toilets
and access ramps with a sprinkling of fairy
dust and twirl of their magic wand.
For years interior designers painstakingly
belabored the task of making bathrooms safe,
accessible and stylish; they needed function
and fashion to be joined at the hip, but the
truth is- few safety products take “style”
into mind when making a product safe.
Clients with the financial means to hire an
interior designer are as concerned for
fashion as they are function. Until
recently, designers and remodelers were at a
loss when it came to combining style and
function, but manufacturers have heeded the
market places demand for quality materials,
stylish features and accessibility. One
such example, relatively new to the aging in
place scene is the
American
Standard line of walk in baths. Interior
Designers have raved over the recent
unveiling of the line of walk in bathtubs
with its high-end features such as quick
drain, chromatherapy and all of the
hydrotherapy options of a world renowned
spa. The
acrylic walk in bath raises the bar not
only for the walk in tub industry, but for
safety product manufacturers across the
board; the demand for these
walk in tubs proves that style is as
important to retirees as safety.
Other products
that meet the approval of client and
designers discriminating tastes are
touchless faucets, which are not only a
great safety product for those with limited
mobility, but they’ve proven to be so
environmentally friendly that their making
their way from public facilities to
residential homes. From bathtubs to
touchless faucets and safety bars with
designer finishes on them- the next
generation of retirees will have their nests
padded and fluffed with safety features
which meet their doctors approval and
stylish mobility aids which will make both
the retiree and their designer smile.
