Many of our walk in tub customer’s are vaguely aware of the industry options for walk in tubs; much less, the differences between the types of tub designs to meet specific needs. There is a distinct difference between a handicap tub and a walk in bathtub.

A Handicap Tub or Disable tub is a bathtub designed for people with handicaps, usually someone who is in need of a wheelchair or hoyer lift. Many times, these same tubs are also referred to as a wheelchair accessible tub. A disable tub is designed with a large outward or sliding door to make wheelchair to tub transfer simple -and in most cases- without the necessity of a transfer bench.

A walk in bathtub is designed for elderly or those with limited mobility who find it difficult to step over the side of a traditional bathtub. Walk in tubs, in most cases, have an inward swinging door with a low threshold. Christmas At Remain Active Walk In Tubs

‘Tis the season for parties, loved ones, cookies, cocoa and candy canes! In the hustle and bustle of the season Remain Active Walk In Tubs wants to remind you the importance of caring for yourself and your loved ones and ensuring bathroom safety.

The importance of proactive bathroom safety can not and should not be overlooked in our efforts to care for our loved ones. Some of Remain Active safety tubs suggestions include:

Ensure that bathroom rugs are flat against the floor. If the user has unsteady footing or uses a walker the bathroom mat should be removed.

Never drape extension cords or electrical lines across the floor or sink areas. These are tripping hazards.

A handicap tub users should consider mounting an extra bathroom safety bar to the back wall (long wall) of the bathroom. This additional safety bar can be used to raise and lower the bather on the seat.

A walk In bathtub has a low threshold making entry and exit easier, but a wet floor and unsteady feet are a toxic combination- be sure to put a non-slip, suctioned back bathmat on the floor in front of the walk in bath.

If possible- use non-transitioning floors- meaning, all the home has carpet or hardwood etc….the transition from one floor finish to the other is difficult for wheelchairs and walkers to navigate.
