ACTiveCare: Osteoporosis & Walk In Tubs

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

osteoporosis, walk in tub, handicap tub and bathroom safety products.

How can a Remain Active Walk In Tub help those with osteoporosis? Can a handicap tub or walk in tub really be that essential for a senior to live a full and independent lifestyle? According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) Osteoporosis poses a serious
threat to 28 million Americans, resulting in 300,000 hip fractures, 700,000 spinal vertebral fractures and
250,000 wrist fractures annually. The adverse affect on quality of life for seniors is staggering; 432,000
hospital admissions and 180,000 nursing home placements per year. These statistics are particularly tragic
when the emotional and psychological costs are also considered. A recent study demonstrated that 80% of women over the age of 75 would prefer death to a hip fracture that resulted in nursing home placement –which occurs in one out of four hip fractures.
Remain Active wants to educate seniors, keep them safe and keep them active. A walk in tub, safety bar and slip resistant mat can make all the difference between suffering from a hip fracture and nursing home placement- or an independent life at home!

Walk In Tubs in Assisted Living Facilities

Friday, June 4th, 2010

walk in tubs, walk in tub

Remain Active Walk in Tubs has provided handicap tubs and step in baths to assisted living homes for years. One of the things that we hear time and time again from the home directors and decision makers is that Remain Active not only helped the home choose the best walk in tub to meet the residents needs, but we also helped them through the red tape of building codes and guidelines for assistive living facilities.
Many senior homes, nursing homes and assistive living facilities have community bathrooms. This can pose a problem trying to meet everyone’s needs including the caregivers. Remain Active believes that our Hydro Elite Series our premier walk in tub line is a great resource for facilities who have mobile patients that want to continue to tend to their own hygiene and be as independent as possible. The Hydro Elite Series is easy to enter and exit with a low threshold. The built in safety bar and 17″ high ADA compliant seat makes standing up to exit the tub an easy task.
In addition to our Hydro Elite Series we also provide wheel chair accessible tubs ( also known as handicap tubs) to patients who have limited to no mobility. The handicap accessible tubs are easy for caregivers to assist residents into the bathtub without the use of a transfer bench. Our line of handicap tubs is vast with several options, including the Aquassure designed to be used with a lift.
It’s important for facility directors to do their homework, know the county codes and know the options of walk in tubs available to the residents of their homes.

Proof Is In The Pudding

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

We’ve all heard the old adage “the proof is in the pudding”. This saying means that the quality or true value of something can only be judged or measured once it’s been put to use or tested.
A step in tub sounds like a great idea- looks like a great idea, but does the expense and bother of installation really add up to being worth the effort?

Time after time we’ve sold walkin tubs and bath safety products to customers who later called and said that they wish they would have done it years earlier!
Mrs. Stanley of Omaha called back after her acrylic walk in tub was installed and said that she just never realized the strain and trouble she and her mother went through assisting her mother take a bath. Mrs. Stanley says ”The proof is in the pudding! I would have never fully realized the ease and necessity of having this walk in tub for mother without purchasing it!”
Don’t let your parents and loved ones bath time be a struggle! The “proof is in the pudding” there is a safer, easier alternative to bathtime!

Remain Active Walk In Tubs offers a wide variety of independent living resources through our Hydro-Elite Series Walk In Tubs and American Standard Walk In Baths.

Tips for Finding & Working with a Walk In Tub Installer

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Remain Active Walk in tubs sells factory direct, shipping straight to the end user. We pride ourselves in saving our customers money by cutting out the middle man. However, we are aware that at times this leaves the customer pondering how to go about having their walk in bathtub installed.
The process is actually quite simple and very much worth the money you’ll save by being your own contractor!
The first step is to ask friends and family if they have a plumber they would recommend. Word of mouth referrals are by far the best kind of reference! The second step is to make sure your installer is licensed AND insured; being a member of the BBB is also a great benefit to you as a consumer- but not a necessity.
The installer of your choice will need to come and measure your bathroom, hallway openings and bathroom door to determine which size of walk in tub you will require. All estimates and consulations should be free of charge and without obligation! If you choose to purchase a walk in tub with hydrotherapy, your contractor will need to be prepared to have two dedicated 15 amp circuits and need to provide a GFI outlet for the pump.
Each tub purchase is shipped out with installtion instructions, product manual and trouble shooting points.
Remain Active walk in tubs has free technical assistance for installers. Please feel free to call our offices at 1-800-397-1123 to request a free copy of installation instructions prior to purchase.

Senior Living Resource: Use It Or Lose It

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Have you ever cleaned out your garage or storage unit and found gadgets and gizmo’s that you’ve forgotten  you had- because you simply didn’t use it?  Unfortunately, our muscles start deteoriating after they’re not used for extended periods of time.   Too bad there wasn’t an automated discarding of our accumulated belongings that aren’t put to use!

It’s important that Seniors REMAIN ACTIVE so that they can remain Safe, Confident and Independent!

Remain Active Walk in Tubs works to provide seniors of our community and around the nation with tips to maintain their lifestyles, health and independence. One of the most important steps towards independent living is keeping an exercise regimine.

Did you know that according to the NIH, US hospitals report 300,00o broken hips in the USA each year? Most broken hips are caused by slips and falls- most of which occur in the bathroom! Many factors combined could effectively reduce the number of bathroom falls in the USA. Properly placed bathroom safety products would elimate some of those falls, a walk in tub  could safe a person the fear of stepping over the side of a tub, and the potential hazard of climbing out of one.
One of the factors that only requires your dedication and time is exercise! There are simple exercises that restore your muscle strength  and  will help you regain or maintain your balance.

Always check with your care provider before attempting any exercise program.

Side Leg Raises: strengthen muscles at sides of hips and thighs

Strengthening the side muscles of your hips and thighs is important for good balance.  The following exercises have been taken from an article written by Sharon O’ Brien and posted at www.about.com /seniorliving
  1. Stand straight, directly behind table or chair, feet slightly apart.
  2.

  3. Hold table or chair for balance.
  4.

  5. Slowly lift one leg to side, 6 to 12 inches out to the side.
  6.

  7. Keep your back and both legs straight.
  8.

  9. Don’t point your toes downward; keep them facing forward during this exercise. Hold this position.
  10.

  11. Slowly lower leg. Repeat with other leg.
  12.

  13. Keep back and knees straight throughout exercise.
  14.

  15. Alternate legs until you repeat exercise 8 to 15 times with each leg.
  16.

  17. Rest. Do another set of 8 to 15 alternating repetitions.

Remain Active Walk In Tubs always suggests that you work at your own pace and listen to your body! Unlike the junk that accumulates in our garages- muscles don’t build over night-and if you don’t use it-you lose it! Give yourself time; stay dedicated and consistent- because only you hold the key to your health and future.

Senior Living Resources

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

We’ve blogged a lot over the last year about aging in place. There’s much to be said about the psychological and emotional impact on a senior citizen when their forced to relocate due to being unable to remain at home.

America’s baby boomers have learned a lot by watching their parents struggle with the changing needs of their parents. We’ve learned by their mistakes- we now prepare and anticipate extended care needs- instead of reacting in a time of crisis.

Remain Active Walk In Tubs continues to be a leader for independent living resources. Our numerous lines and options with walk in tubs meets the growing demand for independent living and senior care so that america’s seniors can age in place with peace of mind.
Many resources are available through community organizations, church programs and state funded opportunities. It’s time to take action- prepare your parents home for aging now. Anticipate- don’t react.

Our walk in tubs are available at an introductory level soaker to the top of the line 32×60 with combo massage, chromatherapy and heated blowers. We have a senior solution for every bathing need!

Senior Living Resources: Assistive Technology (AT)

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Remain Active Walk In Tubs combs the internet, trade magazines and senior living resources to stay on top of the concerns of senior citizens, their needs and their desires. There is a growing trend of seniors turning to technology to make their lives easier and to remain independent for a longer period of time. There is a misconception that assistive technology (AT) is always expensive, complex, electronic, and high-tech. This is not true- your reading glasses are considered “assistive technology” and so are bathroom safety products such as safety bars and slip resistant bath mats! Assistive Technology
is anything and everything that allows you to REMAIN ACTIVE and overcome any mobility issues you may face.
Remain Active offers several “AT” products aside from our complete line of walk in tubs, we also carry safety bars, toilet raisers and assistive living products such as rubber lever handles and bath seats. Making your life easier, helping you remain independent and safe is our main goal- don’t over look the small things- well placed hand bars, wheel chair ramps, hearing aids or even magnifying glasses!

Senior Living Resources: CHAIR EXERCISE

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Remain Active Walk In Tubs promotes senior awareness regarding issues such as health, social activities and senior exercise! It is our goal to help you Remain Safe, Confident and above all- REMAIN ACTIVE.

There are many community programs that help senior citizens lead indepenent and active lifestyles. However, you don’t have to be with a group to exercise, and you don’t have to join a class. There are many simple exercises you can do at home in the privacy of your own home.

If you have trouble standing on your own a good choice for you would be CHAIR EXERCISES also known as Chair Aerobics. These exercises are a popular activity among seniors. Exercising with the use of a chair helps you to maintain your balance without the fear of slipping or falling.
Here are some examples of exercises to help you maintain your health, improve circulation, maintain cognitive thinking, build muscles and improve mobility.

Exercise Examples
You need to exercise your arms and legs to tone your muscles and keep them strong. Some easy chair excercises for seniors include:

Boxing or punching (without fully extending or snapping the elbow)
Arm circles
Foot bounces (put your feet flat on the floor and lift your heal in time to the music, do one foot at a time, both or alternate)
Leg kicks (extend your leg and kick out)
Leg crosses (scoot down on your chair so you can fully extend your legs, Cross them, and uncross them in the air)
You want to work your lower body as much as possible. Many chair excercises for seniors involve popular warm-ups sitting down.

Seated Jumping Jacks involves sitting up tall and placing your feet spread apart on the ground with all your weight. Then lift them up, cross them in the air, and place them on the floor crossed. Lift again, uncross and put down. Repeat this exercise 20 times.
Work your full body by pushing out your legs and arms at the same time and straigtening them.
Another variation of chair excercises involves standing up and using the chair for balance or as a tool. Leg squats or knee bands are a great example of standing up and using the chair for balance.

These exercises were taken from www.lovetoknow.seniors.com
