handicap tubs, aging in place and walk in tubs

Remain Active Walk In Tubs has always encouraged seniors to be independent; however, there comes a time when the elderly may need to make a lifestyle change. Many families struggle with knowing when the right time to step in and become care-givers to their aging parents. Remain Active Walk in Tubs has put together a list to help you see the number of danger signs that help you know when an elderly loved ones needs extra help. Before making our list, we want to encourage the care-giver to include the elderly patient in all discussions and decisions, be considerate of their needs, proactive to alleviate fears and compassionate to whatever changes they are facing.

Geriatric social workers and physicians warn that many factors should be weighed before any changes in living arrangements are made, however there are some specific things to look for- and if these warning signs are evident in your loved ones- then action should be taken to ensure your loved ones safety.
-A noticeable change in personality or behavior
-Drop in Weight: This could be a sign of serious illness- but most likely is an indication that the senior isn’t eating or may not be preparing foods.
-Failure to Take Medications (or overdosing): This is a sign of forgetfulness, confusion or a misunderstanding of the doctor’s instructions.
-Car Accidents: The Elderly can become easily disorientated, traffic accidents can also be caused by slow reflexes, poor vision or the general inability to handle a vehicle
-Note:Disorientation of a consistent nature may indicate a need for help. Examples include not knowing who one is, where one is, who the family is, or talking to people who are not there.
-Lack of Hygiene: The deterioration of personal hygiene such as bathing, shaving, dentures, etc is a sign of either mental or physical complications. When a person is no longer able to keep up basic hygiene practices it’s important to either find a hospice service, home health assistant or for a family member to step up the assistance the loved one is receiving.
-Home Safety:When an elderly loved one is able to live an active and safely continue their independent lifestyle by aging in place- we still suggest that family members are active in the aging adults life. Remain Active’s blog has a lot of information on aging in place, bathroom safety, walk in tubs and handicap tubs for wheel chair accessible bathing.

Aquassure Bathtub

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Remain Active Walk In Tubs is always looking for ways to better meet the needs of our customers. It didn’t take long for us to realize that many American’s are beyond the stage of requiring a walk in tub- and are in need of a tub which can be used with a transfer bench or straight from a wheelchair. Remain Active was proud to partner with Aquassure Bath Products to offer the perfect independent living solution!

Unlike walk-in bathtubs, wheelchair users able to transfer to and from a bed can use our tub unassisted. If assistance is needed, our tubs accommodate lifts, and the elevated design reduces back strain and bending for caregivers. Other tubs have a chair style seat for bathers, while our bathtub allows bathers to stretch out and relax, enjoying a full body immersion spa experience.

To enter the tub, sit down in the doorway and slide back as you would into a bed. Your legs slide in without any strain. Then slide the door shut - it seals by itself. No fussy latches or lock pins needed to prevent leaks and spills. The faucets and grab bars are all within easy reach.

The sliding door in the side of the bathtub opens like a van door, so it doesn’t get in your way or require extra clearance. It seals using the water pressure inside the tub. Filling the Aquassure bathtub increases the seal strength and integrity. The whole bathtub is elevated on a cabinet base with drawers, providing additional storage underneath. The door sill of the bathtub is 20” high for easy seated access. There is clearance for a wheeled lift, when needed.

The Aquassure Bathtub comes with pre-installed, high-flow fixtures and uses less water than most ‘walk-in’ tubs for a faster, more comfortable fill. Our fixtures allow you to pre-set the water temperature and offer choices of easy-to-use lever handles or optional push-button controls. All the controls are within easy reach. Choices of air jets, water jets, or both are also available for a therapeutic spa experience. The unique cabinet base can be matched to home décor with plain or hardwood finishes to enhance the ambiance of your bathing area.

For more information on The Aquassure Bathtub or other walk in tub units available through Remain Active please call our offices 1-800-397-1123.

We’ve blogged a lot over the last year about aging in place. There’s much to be said about the psychological and emotional impact on a senior citizen when their forced to relocate due to being unable to remain at home.

Many resources are available through community organizations, church programs and state funded opportunities. It’s time to take action- prepare your parents home for aging now. Anticipate- don’t react.

Senior Living Resources: Assistive Technology (AT)

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Remain Active Walk In Tubs combs the internet, trade magazines and senior living resources to stay on top of the concerns of senior citizens, their needs and their desires. There is a growing trend of seniors turning to technology to make their lives easier and to remain independent for a longer period of time. There is a misconception that assistive technology (AT) is always expensive, complex, electronic, and high-tech. This is not true- your reading glasses are considered “assistive technology” and so are bathroom safety products such as safety bars and slip resistant bath mats! Assistive Technology
is anything and everything that allows you to REMAIN ACTIVE and overcome any mobility issues you may face.
Remain Active offers several “AT” products aside from our complete line of walk in tubs, we also carry safety bars, toilet raisers and assistive living products such as rubber lever handles and bath seats. Making your life easier, helping you remain independent and safe is our main goal- don’t over look the small things- well placed hand bars, wheel chair ramps, hearing aids or even magnifying glasses!

Senior Living Resources: CHAIR EXERCISE

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Remain Active Walk In Tubs promotes senior awareness regarding issues such as health, social activities and senior exercise! It is our goal to help you Remain Safe, Confident and above all- REMAIN ACTIVE.

There are many community programs that help senior citizens lead indepenent and active lifestyles. However, you don’t have to be with a group to exercise, and you don’t have to join a class. There are many simple exercises you can do at home in the privacy of your own home.

If you have trouble standing on your own a good choice for you would be CHAIR EXERCISES also known as Chair Aerobics. These exercises are a popular activity among seniors. Exercising with the use of a chair helps you to maintain your balance without the fear of slipping or falling.
Here are some examples of exercises to help you maintain your health, improve circulation, maintain cognitive thinking, build muscles and improve mobility.

Exercise Examples
You need to exercise your arms and legs to tone your muscles and keep them strong. Some easy chair excercises for seniors include:

Boxing or punching (without fully extending or snapping the elbow)
Arm circles
Foot bounces (put your feet flat on the floor and lift your heal in time to the music, do one foot at a time, both or alternate)
Leg kicks (extend your leg and kick out)
Leg crosses (scoot down on your chair so you can fully extend your legs, Cross them, and uncross them in the air)
You want to work your lower body as much as possible. Many chair excercises for seniors involve popular warm-ups sitting down.

Seated Jumping Jacks involves sitting up tall and placing your feet spread apart on the ground with all your weight. Then lift them up, cross them in the air, and place them on the floor crossed. Lift again, uncross and put down. Repeat this exercise 20 times.
Work your full body by pushing out your legs and arms at the same time and straigtening them.
Another variation of chair excercises involves standing up and using the chair for balance or as a tool. Leg squats or knee bands are a great example of standing up and using the chair for balance.

These exercises were taken from www.lovetoknow.seniors.com

Remain Active Walk In Tubs encourages you to maintain an active exercise regime and to inspire those around you to join you in your quest to Remain Active.
Remain Active offers safety bars that may be used in conjuction with your exercise routine on our Bathroom Safety Products page, and we also offer hydrotherapy options on our walk in tubs to help promote better circulation and muscle massage for seniors.

Aging In Place: Bathroom Safety

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

With the housing market being as it is many Americans are choosing to age in place instead of moving to retirement communities. As a result, there are many new safety products, community services and options for seniors citizens who choose to remain at home during retirement and beyond.

The key factor to “Aging in Place” is to be able to plan ahead for service needs, or mobility issues that you may not be facing now.

A walkin bathtub may seem like a luxury now, but in the future it very well may be a necessity. A walk in tub effectively reduces many risks associated with bathing. The number one concern of many seniors is the fear of stepping over the side of the tub- and with a step in bathtub you’ve eliminated the hazard of losing your balance while stepping into the tub.
Slipping in the bathroom causes serious injuries to thousands of senior citizens annually. Although our Hydro-Elite Series has a textured floor in the tub- you want to make sure that you have well placed, rubber backed safety mats on all slippery floor surfaces.
There are many tips and safety procedures that you can followed to ensure your or a loved ones safety. For more tips check out our blog archives under keyword AGING IN PLACE

Non-Profits Play Big Role In Developing Better Healthcare for Seniors

Friday, July 10th, 2009

The non-profit sector has been on the cutting edge of creating services and organizations for seniors and disabled individuals that enable them to age in place. These agencies provide basic and acute home care, various degrees of medical services, nursing assistance and even food preparation and delivery. Many programs are available to both middle and low income senior citizens.

With a consistent rise in the population of senior citizens- it is increasingly important that organizations work together to provide our aging community with collaborative resources for health care, social services, medical assistance and companionship. The solutions to developing better health care and provisions to our parents and grandparents can not be left to state and federal agencies; families, communities and private organizations have done a tremendous job of stretching limited tax dollars and offering hands-on assistance to our oldest generation.

Remain Active Walk in Tubs is proud of our local communities, churches and non-profit groups that have stepped up to the plate to be a positive source of comfort and help to the seniors of our communities!

Home Solutions To Assisted Living

Monday, July 6th, 2009

A walk in tub can be part of the solution to your parent’s ability to remain in their homes for the longest time possible. A walk in bathtub reduces the risk of falling, slipping or being stuck in the bathtub unable to get out.

There are many factors to consider when preparing your parents home for aging in place- safety and forethought is the key to a successful renovation. Many caregivers find themselves in a “reactive” mode to aging parents instead of a proactive position to anticipate changes in mobility, adjustments in care required for those who choose to live in their home for as long as possible.

Walk in tubs are one of the more obvious solutions to bathroom safety for those with limited mobility. We offer a wide range of hydrotherapy options, walk in tub sizes and expedited shipping for rush jobs.

We encourage you to understand your options and to research the advantages of Aging in Place.
